At the IZFPS, the study of particle self-organization processes is a central topic. A laser scanning confocal microscope (Leica TCS SP5 II) enables the 3D visualization of particle aggregates and thin films. The combined high spatial and temporal resolutions of the instrument make it possible to explore dynamic processes in dispersions of sub-micron particles. For example, the chemical fuel induced propulsion of catalytic patchy particles or the emulsion-evaporation induced assembly of “photonic balls” are being investigated.
